چکیده

Title of Thesis: THATCH AND SOIL PESTICIDE DEGRADATION AND MICROBIAL ACTIVITY AS INFLUENCED BY TURF CULTIVATION PRACTICES Yusong Mu, Master of Science, 2009 Thesis Directed By: Mark J. Carroll, Ph.D. Associate Professor Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Pesticide degradation in turf is complicated by presence of an organic matter enriched layer called thatch. It is not well understood how the extensive pesticide sorption capacity of thatch may affect the aerobic degradation of pesticides in thatch. Hollow tine cultivation and vertical mowing are two commonly used cultivation practices used to control thatch. Two studies were conducted to determine how these two cultural practices may affect microbial activity and pesticide degradation within thatch and soil. Hollow tine cultivation briefly enhanced microbial activity within thatch while vertical mowing had no consistent effect on thatch or soil microbial activity. Neither cultivation practice consistently altered the aerobic degradation of 2,4-D, flutolanil or chlorpyrifos. Thatch and soil aerobic degradation constants obtained for flutolanil and chlorpyrifos supported the hypothesis that strongly adsorbed pesticides are shielded from microbial populations that degrade pesticides within thatch.

The Fate of Diazinon Applied to Thatched Turf

Diazinon (O,0-diethyl·0-(2-isopropyl"6.methyl-4-primidinyl) phosphorothioate) is widely used to control turfarass insect pests. Poor control of soil-inhabiting insects has been found where diazinon has been applied to thatched turfgrass stands. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the environmental fate of diazlnon applied to turfgrass stands. A microecosystem was used to follow the fate o...

Effect of planting covers on herbicide persistence in landscape soils.

Recent monitoring shows that the majority of urban streams in the United States are contaminated by pesticide residues, and the contamination is mainly due to runoff from residential landscapes. In this study we evaluated the effect of landscape planting on persistence of the herbicides 2,4-D and dicamba in soil under laboratory conditions. The herbicides exhibited substantially different persi...

Soil Amendments and Fertilizer Source Effects on Creeping Bentgrass Establishment, Soil Microbial Activity, Thatch, and Disease

Natural organic fertilizers require microbial degradation for nitrogen (N) release, but their ability to promote rapid turfgrass establishment has not been well documented in newly constructed sand-based rootzones. This 2-year field study evaluated the influence of two general fertilizer and soil amendment programs for their effect on establishment and quality of three creeping bentgrass (Agros...
